One of the primary concepts central to our current understanding of periodontal disease development and progression is that only periodontal pathogens are causative, and the rest of the bacteria are either beneficial or not participating in gum disease development. New research, however, indicates that these concepts do not accurately explain what is happening. This research may fundamentally change our understanding of periodontal disease.
